The Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency(ANEEL) Board approved last Tuesday (April 23) the Strategic Research and Development (R&D) Project Call No. 015/2012 entitled "Management of Severe Impacts of Climate Events in the Electric Energy Sector". The need for a call on this issue came from the perception that, in the last few years, several technical and academic studies have shown vulnerabilities and uncertainties to which the electrical system is exposed to in a scenario of changes in global weather.
As these studies mainly point the impacts on generation, the Call proposes to develop new tools and procedures for the transmission and distribution segments to act preventively during natural disasters, to reduce the impact and speed up restoration and reconstruction of the electric network.
The theme was suggested by the Brazilian Association of Electric Energy Distributors – ABRADEE and its relevance was evaluated and supported by the technical areas of the Agency.
The proposals of strategic projects will have a mandatory and in-person initial assessment, as well as monitoring of the project execution in periodic meetings. The project will be approved only after results are assessed, resources are employed and investments are made. When choosing the studies, preference will be given to cooperative studies, seeking uniform criteria. The Call can be seen on the ANEEL website (www.aneel.gov.br), at “Education/Research and Development – Research and Development – Themes for Investment in R&D”. (PG/AC)
