The 7th Congress on Technological Innovation in Electricity (Citenel) and the 3rd Seminar on Energy Efficiency in the Electricity Sector (Seenel) began on Monday at the SulAmérica Convention Center, in Rio de Janeiro. During the opening ceremony, the Director-General of ANEEL, Romeu Donizete Rufino, said that the events are an excellent opportunity to be accountable to society and present results of the Research and Development and Energy Efficiency Programs. Mr. Rufino stressed the importance of initiatives to stimulate the emergence of measures that help combat power waste in Brazil and mentioned the challenge of the city of Rio de Janeiro to minimize technical losses of power. According to the Director, the exchange of experiences between the companies in this subject and the investment in innovation can result in effective solutions to the problem.
Maurício Tolmasquim, President of the Energy Research Company (EPE), stated that the Research and Development Program creates an important bridge between the productive sector and universities. The Energy Efficiency Program, in turn, allows for reducing the need for energy supply.
Altino Ventura, Secretary of Energy Planning and Development of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, said that Citenel and Seenel are already part of the calendar of events for the electricity sector and that technological advances such as the smart grid and distributed generation are essential in view of recent changes in the electricity sector.
Main Speech – The Professor of the MIT Sloan School of Management, Scott Stern, gave a speech on the subject “Innovation: The New Brazilian Economic Strategy”. Mr. Stern pointed out the need for Brazil to stop merely adopting technologies and become an innovator. According to the professor, the country has the necessary resources to introduce innovations in the renewable energy sector but still has not managed to stand out as a paradigm of global innovation.
