The second day of the 7th Congress on Technological Innovation in Electricity (Citenel) and the 3rd Seminar on Energy Efficiency (Seenel) was marked by the exhibition of experience in energy efficiency from three countries: Germany, United Kingdom, and Mexico.

Ignacio Bedoya, of Energy Engineers, highlighted the importance of energy agencies in Germany as facilitators of the development of projects related to energy efficiency. According to Bedoya, entities such as Energy Engineers provide neutral and independent advice to companies interested in making their processes more efficient from an energy standpoint. These companies, by adopting efficient practices, are certified by the government and start receiving tax incentives.

In the United Kingdom, the main focus of the sector’s policies is to combat climate change, in view of the emission reduction commitments undertaken by the country. According to Adam Hawkes, of the Imperial College, besides command and control, voluntary agreements policies are also adopted between the government and companies to reduce emissions in exchange for climate change tax exemptions. Adam pointed out the need to having good knowledge of consumer behavior prior to formulating a public policy so that its objectives are in line with the reality of citizens.

Santiago Creuheras, of the Secretary of Energy of Mexico, presented the home appliance exchange program developed by the Mexican government, whose aim is to replace refrigerators, air conditioners and light bulbs with more efficient models. According to him, the measure has shown positive results in both power savings and in cost reduction for Mexican families and the government, which has been able to reduce subsidies to tariffs.

Citenel and Seenel will continue until tomorrow (8/7) and another two panels are planned. The first on “Technology prospecting, innovation and property rights” will be held today at 5:30 pm. The second will be held tomorrow at 10 am, with the topic “Public mechanisms to promote energy efficiency in Brazil”.
