Brazil has 68.6 million power consumption units. The data is contained in the Decision Support System (SAD)of the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (ANEEL), as of October 2010.
The figure is 39% higher than that of 2001, when the country had 49.35 million consumption units.
The residential class is the largest both in the number of consumption units, with 58.3 million representing 85.02% of the total, and in consumption, with 9.2 million Megawatts/hours (MWh), accounting for 34.75% of the power consumed.
Industrial consumers account for 572,300 connections, with 25.58% of the overall consumption. Trade, services and other activities totaled 4.96 million consumption units, with 21.4% of consumption. Rural connections account for 3.91 million, with 4.65% of consumption, not including rural consumption units targeted at aquiculture, with 105,000 connections, and rural irrigators, with another 53,000.
Other consumers are the government, with 517,800 units, urban lighting, with 76,500 connections, public services, with 69,150, and private consumption units, with 8,400 units.
The ten distributors with the highest numbers of consumption units account for more than 57% of the total number of connections. Cemig Distribuição S/A, which operates in Minas Gerais, is the largest distributor in volume of consumption units, with seven million, followed by Eletropaulo Metropolitana Eletricidade de São Paulo S/A, with six million, and Companhia de Eletricidade do Estado da Bahia (Coelba), with 4.84 million.
