According to the annual readjustment calendar, the energy tariffs at three distributors will be updated in March: Ampla Energia e Serviços S/A, Empresa Força e Luz João Cesa Ltda. and Empresa Força e Luz Urussanga Ltda.

Ampla’s readjustment shall take effect on March 15, whereas João Cesa’s and Urussanga’s will take effect on March 30.Ampla requested a 9.55% readjustment from ANEEL. The other two companies have until March 10 to send in their proposal.

Each company’s readjustment index is calculated by the Superintendence of Economic Regulation (SRE), based on a  contract formula, and it is submitted for approval to the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency's (ANEEL) collegiate board during a public meeting.Ampla’s readjustment will be deliberated at the Agency’s board meeting this Tuesday (3/1).

Ampla supplies energy to 66 cities in Rio de Janeiro and it has nearly 2.3 million consumer units.João Cesa serves part of the city of Siderópolis (SC), whereas Urussanga serves the city in Santa Catarina by the same name.

The annual readjustment is one of three mechanisms for updating tariffs stipulated in contracts signed between the companies and the Federal Government with the objective of maintaining the concession’s economic-financial equilibrium. The others are the Periodic Tariff Review (RTP) and the Extraordinary Review. The RTP occurs on average every four years, whereas the extraordinary review may occur at any time, as long as the concession has a justified disequilibrium or there is the creation of a new sectorial contribution, for example.

These mechanisms are applied to permit a fair energy tariff for consumers while also being sufficient to cover service costs at quality levels stipulated by ANEEL.It must also remunerate needed investments, stimulate increased efficiency and quality of services provided by the concessionaire and guarantee comprehensive service to the market, without geographic or income distinction.(GL/DB)
