The contract date for the DME Distribuição S/A. tariff readjustment and review was altered from June 28, to October 28, in accordance with a decision handed down today (3/22) by the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (ANEEL) board. The company serves approximately 65 thousand consumer units in the municipality of Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais.

With this change, the deadline for the company’s current tariffs was extended to October, when the company’s tariff review will be conducted. This was previously projected for June 28, 2012. Public Hearing no. 03/2011 to discuss this date change was open from February 2 to 9 of this year.

The alteration in the company’s readjustment and review date modifies the readjustment and review calendar adopted by ANEEL, which uses the concession contract signing date as the base date. See the annual readjustment calendar here.

The annual readjustment is one of three mechanisms for updating tariffs stipulated in contracts signed between the companies and the Federal Government with the objective of maintaining the concession’s economic-financial equilibrium. The others are the Periodic Tariff Review (RTP) and the Extraordinary Review. The RTP occurs on average every four years, whereas the extraordinary review may occur at any time, as long as the concession has a justified disequilibrium or there is the creation of a new sectorial contribution, for example.

These mechanisms are applied to permit a fair energy tariff for consumers while also being sufficient to cover service costs at quality levels stipulated by ANEEL. It must also remunerate needed investments, stimulate increased efficiency and quality of services provided by the utility and guarantee comprehensive service to the market, without geographic or income distinction.
