The ten largest hydropower plants (HPP) in Brazil account for 28.9% of the country’s installed capacity. In total, the power granted reaches 32,900 Megawatts (MW), the country’s full capacity being 114,070MW, of hydro, thermal, wind, solar, and tidal power plants.
The total capacity of these plants accounts for 42.7% of the 77,300MW in hydropower alone. The data are from the Information Database of Generation (BIG) of the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (ANEEL), available at www.aneel.gov.br, on Technical Information.
The power plants Tucuruí I and II, built on River Tocantins, in Tucuruí, Pará, rank first on the list, with 8,370 in full installed capacity. The second place is occupied by Itaipu which, being binational (owned by Brazil and Paraguay), accounts for 7,000 MW, half of its full power.
The third position is occupied by the HPP Ilha Solteira, on the Paraná River, between the municipalities of Ilha Solteira (SP) e Selvíria (MS), with 3,440MW. The HPP Xingó, built on the São Francisco River, between Piranhas (AL) and Canindé de São Francisco (SE), has the fourth largest power, with 3,160MW, followed by the HPP Paulo Afonso IV, also installed on the Rio São Francisco River, in Paulo Afonso, Bahia, with 2,460MW.
