Fonte: ANEELThe national energy matrix has 331 Central Generating Plants (CGH) in operation. These mini-plants, with an installed capacity of up to 1 megawatt (MW), have an installed capacity of 188.7 MW and represent 0.17% of the Brazilian energy matrix. In 1998, 21 plants were recorded with a total capacity of 11.56 MW.

Currently, a station is under construction inl Minas Gerais. Another 68 were awarded by the National Energy Agency (ANEEL), but have not started the works. Santa Catarina is the state with the largest number of CGH in operation, with 77 projects, followed by Minas Gerais, with 73, and Rio Grande do Sul, with 36. Mato Grosso is fourth with 29 stations, whereas São Paulo has 28.
Government policy provides, for those interested in exploring the hydraulic potential of power generators, discounts of at least 50% in rates of use of electrical systems for transmission and distribution.
To start operation, power stations must be registered with the National Energy Agency (ANEEL). According to Decree. 2003/1996, the exploitation of water potential of up to 1 MW is independent from concession or authorization but must be reported to the regulator and inspector of the granting authority for registration.
The registration process of CGHs is free. Entrepreneurs who are interested can choose from two records: one with the allocation of energy for exclusive use and another for the purpose of marketing power. For the two cases the following documents must be submitted:
DOCUMENTS
Registration form with the hydroelectric installed capacity equal to or less than 1 MW, duly completed and signed by the expert. Copy of registration, in CREA, of the technical manager.
Proof of ownership of the area or the right to freely dispose of the land where the generating plant is set and the existing assets in that CGH.
Location plant of the project in a planialtimetric letter published by official entity, in its latest version, containing geographic coordinate system, scale, captions, dates of publication and passage of desired object of study.
Plant with the undertaking in detail, with an indication of the reservoir, arrangement of structures, demarcation of land and feature points of interest.
