From August 2002 to April this year, the increase in electricity tariffs was lower than the accumulated Extended Consumer Price Index (IPCA) of IBGE, for 70.93% of residential consumers in Brazil.
For 28.35% of the residential consumption units, the accumulated adjustment of tariffs exceeded the IPCA, but was lower than the General Market Price Index (IGP-M), of the FGV, in the same period.
For the remaining 0.72%, the tariff adjustment of the period exceeded the IGP-M, according to data from the economics area of the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (ANEEL).
Energy tariffs are subject to two regular adjustment processes: the annual adjustment, usually on the anniversary date of the concession agreements and the periodic revision (on average every four years). There is also the possibility of an extraordinary revision (in the event that any unforeseen event affects the economic balance of the concession).
More information on tariff adjustment processes is available on ANEEL’s website (www.aneel.gov.br), consumer’s space profile, on the booklet "questions & answers on electricity distributors’ tariffs". (GL/FA/DL)
