Landfill produces biogas for thermal plant in RS

Fonte: ANEEL
The company Biotérmica Energia Ltda. was allowed to establish itself as Independent Power Producer* through the implementation of TPP BioTérmica Recreio, located in the city of Minas do Leão, Rio Grande do Sul, until January 2013. The plant will have installed capacity of 6.3 megawatts (MW) with use of landfill gas (LFG) and access and connection at 23 kilovolt (kV) at substation Areal, of Companhia Estadual de Energia Elétrica do Rio Grande do Sul(CEEE-D).

The biogas that will serve as fuel to it comes from a landfill managed by SIL Soluções Ambientais Ltda. (SIL). The company converted into a landfill an area in the open, where it extracted mining coal from, to produce biogas. In addition to restoring the exploited site, the generation will be a solution for the disposal of garbage from more than 135 cities in the state, representing 35% of the population of the state. The landfill receives about two thousand tons of garbage per day, generating an average of 4 000 Nm3*/h of biogas, with an average of 50% of methane, i.e. 2 000 Nm3/h of CH4, which will be the fuel of the plant.

Observing the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto Protocol, the biogas will be completely burned in the plant or in associated flare*** for combustion of the surplus not consumed at Biotérmica. Currently, the flare is already in operation and is awaiting the implementation of the plant.

Biotérmica will be exempt from charges for network access because it uses encouraged primary source (biogas from landfills) and does not exceed the limits of injection in the network. According to pre-contract information between Biotérmica Energia Ltda. and SIL, there is enough biogas to ensure the continuous consumption of the plant until 2025 from the generation of 6MW. (FA/GL)
