The compensation for the use of water resources for power generation to cities, states and Union totaled BRL 179.3 million in May 2011 and BRL 826.1 million in the accumulated of the year (January to May).
In May alone, 663 municipalities in 21 states and the Federal District and the Union received BRL 150.6 million by way of Compensation for Use of Water Resources (CFURH), while the transfer of BRL 28.6 million in royalties (compensation payable by the Itaipu Plant) reached 341 municipalities in five states and the Federal District and the Union in the first five months of the year, the counties received BRL 672.8 million per CFURH and BRL 153.3 million in royalties.
Municipalities are 45% of the collection, whereas other 45% go to the states. Money can be applied in health, education and security programs, but cannot be used to shoot down debt, unless the creditor is the Union, or to pay staff.
The Union receives the remaining 10%, which are distributed to the National Water Agency (ANA), the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (FNDCT) and the Ministries of Environment, Water Resources and Legal Amazon (MMA) and Mines and Energy (MME).
