The Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Energy Agency (ANEEL) held today (14) the workshop "Repotenciação de Usinas Hidrelétricas" (“Repowering of Power Plants”), at the Agency’s auditorium in Brasília. The purpose of the event was to bring together sector stakeholders, regulators and academicians to discuss the proposed regulation to stimulate repowering of hydropower plants (HPP). This process provides for the addition of installed capacity based on the installation of new generating units at existing plants.
Representatives of associations of the electricity sector (APINE, ABRAGE, ABRACE, ANACE, and ABIPE) and university professors Célio Bermann, from USP, and Edson da Costa Borton, from Unifei, made presentations on the subject. The director general of the National Power System Operator (ONS), Hermes Chipp, spoke of the importance of repowering to meet the operating requirements of the National Interconnected System (SIN).
During the event regulatory solutions were discussed for repowering projects to be an alternative to the electricity service and to expand the supply of electricity in the country. Other benefits of the measure were also considered, such as increased reliability of power plants and, as a result, of the SIN, safety in control and supply of power at peak hours, and reduction of maintenance costs.
Based on today’s discussion, ANEEL will be preparing a regulation proposal to be submitted to approval by the Board for opening of the public hearing proceeding for receipt of contributions from society. FA/RA
