R&D Magazine: Measurement of gases helps transformer maintenance

Fonte: ANEEL

CLIC Energia publishes the fifteenth of 30 projects selected for the 4th Edition of R&D Magazine, launched 8/17, during the VI Congress on Technological Innovation in Electrical Energy (CITENEL) and the II Energy Efficiency Seminar in the Electric Sector (SEENEL), held in Fortaleza (CE).The objective is to show society the results achieved with R&D projects. The onsite publication accompanies the order used in the magazine.
The fifteenth article from the Companhia Energética de Pernambuco (Celpe) with the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) is about software that helps predict the need for transformer maintenance by evaluating the wear of the device’s isolating oils. Each transformer has an isolation system comprised of oils that emit gases when submitted to operational stress. The computer software developed by Celpe is able to store reports on gas concentrations with which it is possible to compare results and diagnose whether the transformer under analysis present failures. The solution, called the Power Transformer Predictive Maintenance Smart System (Pedritrafo), is used by Celpe and has become an auxiliary tool for evaluating the operating conditions of the company’s transformers, which are monitored periodically.

Smart system diagnoses failure in transformer by analyzing isolating oil

The Companhia Energética de Pernambuco (CELPE) and the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) have developed a project to help with decision making about predictive maintenance in power transformers. This equipment has an isolation system comprised of oils that emit gases when submitted to operational stress.Analysis of these emissions can indicate the transformer’s status and the need for equipment maintenance.Software was developed as a result of the CELPE project that can store reports of gas concentrations permitting the diagnosis of initial failures from the chromatographic analysis of isolating gases. The decision to conduct maintenance on transformers is important because it avoids failures in this equipment, increasing useful life, and reducing the time and frequency of power outages for users. The concentrations of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, methane, acetylene, ethane, ethylene, carbon monoxide and dioxide can determine the equipment’s operational status. The software developed by the researchers uses an artificial intelligence system for interpreting data gathered in the chromatographic analysis and diagnosing the problem. The solution, called the Power Transformer Predictive Maintenance Smart System (Pedritrafo), is currently being used by CELPE and it has demonstrated it is useful for monitoring isolating oils in transformers, becoming an important tool in decision making about the need for predictive maintenance or not. This is done through the periodic accompaniment of the equipment from data collected by monitoring or field inspection.
