ANEEL declares public utility of 282,300 hectares for Belo Monte works

The board of the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (ANEEL) approved in a public meeting held last week (12/20), the Declaration of Public Utility (DUP) to 282,300 hectares of land located in the municipalities of Altamira, Brasil Novo and Vitória do Xingu, in Pará. The declared area is necessary for the implementation of the construction site, reservoir and Permanent Preservation Area (PPA) of the Hydropower Plant (HPP) Belo Monte.

The expropriated land will also be intended for resettlement of the population affected by the project. See on the table below the division of the declared area by municipality.

The land was requestedby the consortium of Norte Energia S/A, a concessionaire licensed to explore the project, according to the concession agreement signed on August 26, 2010, as a result of the auction held in April that year. The plant will have 11,233.1 megawatts (MW) of total installed capacity.

The general procedures for public utility declaration requests for purposes of expropriation and creation of administrative easements, areas of land necessary for the establishment of facilities for generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, by concessionaires, permit holders and authorization holders are provided in ANEEL Resolution 279/2007.
