Fight against waste generates savings of 2.06 million MWh/year

From March 2008 to December 2011, the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (ANEEL) calculated 914 energy efficiency projects presented by the concessionaires, with investments of about R$2.4 billion. These projects involve initiatives related to solar heating, municipal power management, and cogeneration, among others. Overall, there has been energy savings of approximately 2.06 million megawatt-hour/year (MWh/year).
 
Considering the average consumption of 150 kWh/month per consumer unit, the savings from the projects are equivalent to the consumption of 1 million consumer units per year. In addition, the execution of the projects has reduced demand at peak hours (between 6 PM and 9 PM) at approximately 705,800 kilowatts (kW), which contributed to reduce the need for investments in expanding the supply.
 
In the same period, equipment to combat the power waste was replaced or installed. Between actual and projected amounts, more than 600,000 refrigerators were replaced, in addition to the distribution of over 16 million compact fluorescent lamps.
 
The distributors (concessionaires or permit holders) should apply, on a yearly basis, at least 0.5% of their net operating revenue in actions that aim to combat power waste. The requirement is provided in the concession and permission agreements signed by the distributors, as well as Act 9,991/2000, consisting of the Energy Efficiency Program of Distribution Companies (PEE).
