The approval of the basic project of the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant was published today (27) in the Official Journal of the Union (DOU). The project represents an analysis of the National Energy Agency (ANEEL) and those aspects of the management of hydraulic potential and technical constraints established in the concession contract. It also indicates that the design of the plant is in accordance with the Installation Permit, issued by the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA), and the Grant of Right of Use of Water Resources, published by the National Water Agency (ANA).

Located on the Xingu River, hydrographic basin of the Amazon River (PA), the plant will have an installed capacity of 11,233 megawatts (MW), with an expected average production of energy around 4505 MW average, representing a capacity factor (ratio between the average and maximum production of the plant) of 40%.

In terms of maximum capacity, Belo Monte will be the third largest dam in the world, losing only to the ChineseTrês Gargantasand the binational Itaipu. The energy of this plant was negotiated at specific new energy auction A-5 in 2010 for BRL 78.00/MWh. The start of commercial operation of the first generating unit is scheduled for February 28, 2015. Check here Order No.262 of 01/26/2012. (PG/BG/DB).
