ompensaçãoThe electric energy consumers received R$ 385.18 million in compensation for interruptions in electricity supply in year 2011. The amount is higher than the one registered in 2010, when the consumers in the country received R$ 360.24 million. R$ 103.94 million were paid in compensations for the breach of the individual indicators of Duration of Interruption per Consumer Unit (DIC), Frequency of Interruptions per Consumer Unit (FIC) and Maximum Duration of Continuous Interruption per Consumer Unit (DMIC). The amount of compensation is not necessarily equal to the number of benefited consumers, once one only consumer can be compensated for more than one energy interruption event along the year.

The datacontained in the consolidated balance sheet by the National Agency of Electrical Energy (ANEEL) are based onthe information forwarded by 61 distribution utilities in the country. The data submitted by companies are subject to verification by the Audit Superintendency of Electricity Services (Superintendência de Fiscalização dos Serviços de Eletricidade (SFE).

The largest number ofcompensations and the highest amount paid occurred in the Southeast region of Brazil with R$ 39.68 million payments totaling  R$ 128.82 million. The Northeast region accumulated the second highest number of compensations – R$ 22.39 million, and the Northern region scored the second position in relation to the amount paid – a total of R$ 109, 81 million.

ANEELsets limits for the individual indicators of continuity DIC, FIC and DMIC. Indicators are set monthly, quarterly and annually. When there is violation of the established limits, the distributor must financially compensate the consumer unit. The compensation is automatic, and must be paid within two months after the month of calculation of the indicator (the month in which interruption occurred). Information on the continuity indicators is available in the consumer’s energy bill.
